    The historical name is Hauz-i-Alai ("water tank built by Alai"(Alauddin Khilji)). It was built ~1300 AD by Khilji. However, it was restored and desilted by Firoz Shah Tughlaq over 50 years later, from when it came to be called Hauz Khas (Royal Tank).
